SPITTING UP, INFANT REFLUX
AND GERD
Spitting up, also called
gastroesophageal reflux, GER or infant reflux, is common in babies and is usually
deemed normal. About 40% of young babies spit up
sometimes, since their digestive systems are immature,
making it easier for the stomach contents to flow back
up into the esophagus. The peak age for infant reflux
(spitting
up) is 4 months.
Doctors used to call this an "under-developed
stomach valve" which is what my daughter was diagnosed
with. Infant reflux occurs when babies have eaten too much
or when they've swallowed too much air while feeding.
Infant reflux usually occurs when babies burp. It can also
happen when your baby is drooling. It usually
resolves itself by 6 months to 1 year of age.
A small percentage of babies experience discomfort and other
complications due to infant reflux - this is called Gastroesophageal Reflux
Disease (GERD). Babies might have this disorder if they spit
up or vomit often, scream or cry for hours, refuse
feedings, or don't gain weight. Approximately 1 in
300 infants will present signs and symptoms of GERD and
it is more common in children with neurological
impairments. This condition requires a doctors
care. GERD is particularly common in
preemies (due to their immaturity) and in babies with other health
problems. GERD usually improves by 12-24 months. There is a wealth of information on this conditions both on the
internet and at your local library or bookstore.
As any parent of a baby with infant reflux or GERD
knows - it's messy. Hug-A-Bib baby bibs keep baby clean and
dry!
I custom designed
HUG-A-Bib infant reflux baby bibs to not only be the best baby bib
available, but also to be the perfect bib for any child
with infant reflux or GERD. This baby bibs unique, stay-put
design guarantees that it will not move on the baby, so
when the reflux does happen it goes on the bib where it
belongs, not on baby's clothing. The bib is
absorbent, plush and has a waterproof lining to further
protect baby's clothing.
Our burp
cloth, the Clippy Cloth, was custom designed to compliment the Hug-A-Bib
baby bib. It attaches to the mothers clothing at the shoulder
to stay in place on the mother. It is oversized, padded for
more comfort for the baby's resting head, and waterproof to protect
mom's clothing.
We know that these products will make life easier
for all parents so we offer a
100% Satisfaction Guarantee on every
